Depression is one of the most common effects of separation, divorce & bereavement - you are not alone - most of us have been through it. Key elements on beating the blues:
1. Plan to re-socialise - join a singles or single parent association very soon. Go to a function each week and catch up with friends and family, go shopping with a friend, meet for coffee, host a dinner or family function, accept invitations. 2. Externalise thinking and focus on external interests, activities, events - any thing to take your mind off your worries, stress and yourself. 3. Achieve minor goals - make lists of what needs to be done today, this week etc. What needs to be done at home, what needs fixing, brighten and tidy up your living environment. Tick off your achievements each day - make a new list for tomorrow. 4. Divert negative thoughts that are destructive to anything positive, external events, socialising, planning a list of minor goals, positive memories - force yourself to do this. 5. Rehearse a positive thought several times a day - it may be a memory, a fantasy, a dream, an experience but MUST be positive. 6. Deliberately switch your thoughts to the positive and know that initially it will take effort but will gradually get easier. 7. Practice the above every day, several times a day, every week, take one day at a time. It is essential.
ALSO, consider catching up on all those comedy movies (forget the sad ones) - look for the funny side of life - try to laugh more - it's good medicine.
